Airbus A320neo dominates commerce during the Paris Air Show

The recently completed 2011 Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport (IATA: LBG; ICAO: LFPB) showed that the airline industry has much interest in a new model of aircraft being built by Airbus.  An environmentally friendlier version of the Toulouse-based aircraft maker's A320, the new variant shown off by Airbus at Le Bourget last week is identified by the Greek prefix meaning "new" tacked onto its name (albeit, the end of its name).

The London-based Guardian reported that Airbus did 57 billion USD (39.9 billion EUR; 35.4 billion GBP) in business during the biennial air show, at the general aviation field east of ParisAs reported here last week, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) placed an order for 30 of the A320neo.  But the Guardian reported that the Indian budget carrier IndiGo ordered a stunning 150 of the model (along with 30 ordinary A320s), and that the Malaysian budget carrier Air Asia topped even that, with an order for 200 of the A320neo.  A recap of the events at the world's largest air show, from Aviation International News, states that this latter transaction was "the largest single firm order in aviation history."

Other buyers of the A320neo in Paris last week were the American budget carrier JetBlue Airways, the Chilean airline LAN, the Indian budget carrier GoAir, and Republic Airways, an American holding company which owns six United States-based airlines.

The A320neo models will, according to Airbus, boast more efficient engines than what the ordinary A320 has.  The aircraft maker promises the A320neo will burn 15 percent less fuel than the A320 does.  If true, this means the A320neo will have an additional range (relative to the A320) of 950 kilometers (589 miles), all else equal.  Alternatively, it means the A320neo will be able to carry two metric tons (4,400 pounds) more payload, all else equal.

As it so happens, "neo" is an Airbus acronym for "new engine option."  The "neo" engines are being built by American engine maker Pratt & Whitney, and by CFM International.  The latter is a transnational joint venture between the American firm General Electric, and the French engine maker Snecma.  The A320neo is "due to enter operational use in October 2015," according to a video uploaded by Aviation Week, to YouTube.

LAN starts Peru-Easter Island twice-weekly service

LAN, the national airline of Chile, started a twice-weekly non-stop round-trip route between the Peruvian capital Lima and the Chilean territory Easter Island yesterday.  The route will operate in each direction every Wednesday and Sunday.  It will be flown with the Boeing 767-300, according to a post to LAN's official website, made last July.  The route will fly from Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (IATA: LIM; ICAO: SPIM) to Easter Island's Mataveri International Airport (IATA: IPC; ICAO: SCIP).  LAN is the only airline that flies through Mataveri International on a regular schedule.

LAN is in the process of consolidating with the Brazilian carrier TAM, under a single holding company called LATAM Airlines GroupThe consolidation is expected to be in effect around the middle of this year, according to a radio interview given by LAN Chief Operating Officer Ignacio Cueto last month.

Easter Island is the southeastern corner of a vast collection of Pacific islands known as the Polynesian Triangle.  (The other two corners are New Zealand and Hawaii.)  In European languages, the island is named after the day in 1722 when Dutch explorers made contact with it.  Its local name is Rapa Nui.  James Cook, on behalf of Great Britain, visited the island in 1774.  In 1888, Easter Island was annexed by its nearest neighbor on the mainland to the east, Chile.  In July 2010, a total solar eclipse was visible from the island, drawing thousands of visitors.  Easter Island is most famous for the hundreds of giant monolithic human figures of unknown origin, present there, and called moai.

LAN says merger with TAM will occur in mid-2011

Ignacio Cueto, Chief Operating Officer of the Chilean national airline LAN, said last Friday that his airline's merger with the Brazilian carrier TAM will start sometime around the middle of next year.  Cueto said LAN will be acquiring TAM, under a holding company called LATAM Airlines Group.  The merger still depends on approval by the governments of both countries.  Approval by both Chile and Brazil is expected, even though it would give LATAM Airlines Group "nearly complete control over the Santiago-Sao Paulo route."

LAN, officially Línea Aérea Nacional de Chile, was founded in 1929 and now flies 97 Airbus and Boeing aircraft to 45 destinations in South America, North America, and Europe.  In addition LAN flies to Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.  LAN belongs to the Oneworld airline alliance.  Its main hub is Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (IATA: SCL; ICAO: SCEL) in the Chilean capital of Santiago.  Its main offices are also in Santiago.

TAM, originally Táxi Aéreo Maríla, was founded in 1976 and flies 146 aircraft (Airbus and Boeing) to 63 destinations in South America, North America, and Europe.  TAM belongs to the Star Alliance.  Its hubs are Guarulhos International Airport (IATA: GRU; ICAO: SBGR) in São Paulo, Galeão International Airport (IATA: GIG; ICAO: SBGL) in Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia International Airport (IATA: BSB; ICAO: SBBR) in the Brazilian national capital.

TAM and LAN plan merger, but pursue expansion independently

The largest and third-largest airlines in South America by passengers carried are planning a merger that would, if enacted, create the largest airline based in South America, according to an announcement made on August 13.  The Brazilian airline TAM, and the Chilean flag carrier LAN respectively, each plan to keep their own branding schemes and logos however.  Each of the two airlines will also continue to pursue fleet expansion relatively independently of each other.  Both airlines plan to increase the numbers of Airbus A320 aircraft in their fleets over the course of the next several years.  But TAM also plans to purchase both the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 777 over the next several years.  And LAN plans to focus on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The resulting business entity is expected to be called LATAM Airlines Group.  LAN's Chief Executive Officer is expected to become the CEO of LATAM Airlines Group.  TAM's vice-chairman is expected to become the chairman of LATAM.

TAM was founded in 1976.  It now operates to 61 destinations on the continents of South America, North America, and Europe.  It maintains roughly equal hubs in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia, the national capital.  TAM is headquartered in Sao Paulo.

LAN was founded in 1929.  It now operates to 48 destinations in South America, North America, Europe, and Oceania.  Its largest hub is at Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (IATA: SCL; ICAO: SCEL) in Santiago, the Chilean national capital.  LAN is headquartered in Santiago. 

It is envisioned that the merger will be completed around the middle of next year.
